Ripple Attackathon: Secure the XRP Ledger

Ripple is offering up to $200,000 to users who find security flaws in the proposed XRP Ledger lending protocol, incentivising white hat hackers to “attack” the upcoming platform.

Ripple Attackathon

Ripple is teaming up with blockchain security firm Immunefi to host an “attackathon” aimed at identifying bugs within the XRP Ledger lending protocol. This initiative underscores Ripple’s commitment to security, offering a hefty reward to those who can uncover vulnerabilities, particularly those affecting fund security and vault solvency.

Jasmine Cooper, RippleX Head of Product, emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating:

“The XRPL community is preparing for one of its most significant upgrades yet with the proposed lending protocol, which is expected to go to validator vote later this year. Before any major amendment like this moves forward, it’s critical to ensure the code is as secure and resilient as possible.”

Educational Opportunities and Future Implications

To encourage participation, Ripple and Immunefi are offering a two-week educational period for interested researchers. During this time, participants will have access to Ripple engineers, devnet guides, and test environments. The attackathon will commence on October 27 and run through November 29.

The protocol aims to introduce fixed-term, uncollateralised loans directly on the XRP Ledger, relying on off-chain procedures to determine creditworthiness. Specific targets for participants include liquidation logic, interest accrual bugs, and administrative attacks.

Ripple, although linked to the network’s native token XRP, runs only a small fraction of the XRP Ledger validators.
