UK Announces £1 Billion Investment Into Quantum Computing Research Over Four Years

The United Kingdom has committed more than £1 billion to quantum computing research and trials over the next four years, in a move that officials say is driven by growing national security urgency and the race to commercialise next-generation computing.

The investment forms part of a broader £2 billion national quantum strategy that spans computing, sensing, networking, and workforce development. According to Bloomberg, the commitment positions the UK as one of the first countries to roll out quantum computers at commercial scale.

ProQure: Scaling UK Quantum Computing

Central to the strategy is a first-of-its-kind procurement programme called “ProQure: Scaling UK Quantum Computing,” which will invite companies to develop and test advanced quantum systems. The most promising candidates will be selected to build large-scale machines by the early 2030s.

The initiative brings together research, manufacturing, software, hardware, and procurement into a unified national programme, signalling a shift from early-stage innovation towards commercialisation and real-world deployment.

Broader Economic Impact

Beyond computing, the broader package includes £500 million earmarked specifically for quantum computing, alongside £400 million for sensing and navigation technologies, £125 million for quantum networking, and £205 million for infrastructure scaling. Additional funding supports research hubs and workforce development, including training programmes and internships.

The government estimates that quantum technologies could contribute more than £200 billion to the UK economy over the coming decades while creating over 100,000 jobs. The announcement also includes plans for the IonQ Quantum Innovation Centre, which will host IonQ’s most advanced 256-qubit computer in the UK.

Officials said the effort is designed to accelerate breakthroughs in healthcare, energy, cybersecurity, and financial services, while also strengthening national defence capabilities in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
