AI models in DeFi trading reshape crypto markets

AI models in DeFi trading are shaking up the cryptocurrency landscape, with DeepSeek V3.1 leading the charge in a novel competition. Launched by nof1.ai, Alpha Arena is a live trading experiment that pits top AI models against each other on the Hyperliquid exchange. This innovative benchmark moves beyond traditional AI evaluations, focusing on real-world financial performance.

AI models in DeFi trading

DeepSeek V3.1, an open-source model from China-based DeepSeek-AI, has surged ahead in the competition, achieving a portfolio value of $13,072—a 30.72% return on its initial $10,000 stake. This performance outpaces rivals like xAI’s Grok 4 and Anthropic’s Claude 4.5 Sonnet. DeepSeek’s success is attributed to its sophisticated architecture: a 671-billion-parameter Mixture-of-Experts model, which is both computationally efficient and scalable.

The implications for DeFi traders

The Alpha Arena competition highlights AI’s potential to revolutionise DeFi trading. DeepSeek’s aggressive 15x leveraged positions on major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana have capitalised on the current bull market. This demonstrates how AI can automate strategies and democratise alpha generation in volatile markets.

However, the competition’s short timeframe during a bull market has sparked debate. Critics argue that the results may not reflect true trading skill, as aggressive long strategies are favoured. Calls for extended testing periods are growing, with suggestions to run multiple instances to assess consistency and skill.

DeepSeek’s dominance underscores the transformative potential of open-source AI models in DeFi. Yet, caution is advised. Over-reliance on AI could lead to market manipulation risks, especially with leveraged perpetual contracts. As the competition continues until November 3, 2025, the crypto world watches closely to see if DeepSeek can maintain its lead.
