The Viasat KA-SAT attack 24 Feb 2022

attributed

A cyberattack disrupted Viasat's KA-SAT satellite broadband network about an hour before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, causing what the EU called indiscriminate communication outages across public authorities, businesses and users in Ukraine and several member states.

Attributed to Russia by the EU's High Representative on behalf of the Union (10 May 2022) and by the UK's NCSC, which names the GRU.

Russia's Cosmos 1408 ASAT test 15 Nov 2021

attributed

A direct-ascent anti-satellite missile destroyed Russia's own defunct Cosmos 1408, creating more than 1,500 pieces of trackable debris; US Space Command said the test would likely generate hundreds of thousands of smaller pieces.

US Space Command, on the record: Russia demonstrated a deliberate disregard for the security, safety, stability and long-term sustainability of the space domain.

China's Fengyun-1C ASAT test 11 Jan 2007

acknowledged

China destroyed its own defunct Fengyun-1C weather satellite with a ground-launched kinetic kill vehicle. NASA's Orbital Debris Programme Office catalogued more than 1,600 fragments within three months, the largest debris-generating event on record at the time; fragments remain in orbit today.

The test is undisputed and internationally acknowledged; the debris count is NASA's.

India's Mission Shakti 27 Mar 2019

acknowledged

India's DRDO struck the Indian Microsat-R satellite in low Earth orbit in the country's first anti-satellite test. India's foreign ministry stated the test was conducted low deliberately so that debris would decay and fall back within weeks — the ministry's own claim, recorded as such.

Announced by India's own government; conducted by DRDO per the Ministry of Defence.

GNSS jamming and spoofing around conflict zones since Feb 2022

unattributed

EASA records a notable increase in satellite-navigation jamming and spoofing affecting aviation, particularly around the Baltic, Black Sea, Mediterranean, Middle East and Arctic, and has revised its safety bulletin repeatedly — most recently on 3 July 2026.

The regulator describes affected regions without formally naming a responsible state.

Russia's reported space-based anti-satellite programme 15 Feb 2024

attributed

The White House confirmed US intelligence concerns an anti-satellite capability Russia is developing, while stating it is not an active deployed capability and poses no immediate threat to anyone's safety. Moscow publicly rejects the reports and states its opposition to nuclear weapons in space.

White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby, on the record; the Russian rejection is public but its own transcript has not been checked by this desk.
