SpaceX launched 21 military communications satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base at 07:39 UTC on 10 October 2026. Falcon 9 carried the Space Development Agency’s T1TL-A mission from Space Launch Complex 4E, according to SpaceX’s mission report.
The successful flight followed the countdown abort on 5 October. The payload belongs to SDA’s Tranche 1 Transport Layer, a network designed to move tactical data between satellites and military users.
Falcon 9’s booster returned to Vandenberg
The first stage landed at Landing Zone 4 after its sixth flight, SpaceX confirmed on 10 October. Its previous missions included NROL-179, SDA-T1TL-E and three Starlink launches.
SpaceX describes this as the fourth of nine Tranche 1 missions it will launch for SDA. The 21 spacecraft make up the programme’s fourth transport orbital plane.

The satellites relay military data through optical links
The Transport Layer connects satellites using optical communications, creating multiple paths for military information to reach its destination. SDA’s programme description sets out a low-latency network that connects users through space-based relay nodes.
The transport constellation is part of the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, or PWSA. That wider architecture combines communications with capabilities for missile warning, indication and tracking. The transport satellites carry data through the network; the Tracking Layer supplies dedicated missile-sensing capabilities.
Northrop Grumman supplied this group of 21 spacecraft
Northrop Grumman delivered the 21 satellites for this flight, the company announced on 28 September. Their communications payloads support the operational build-out of PWSA.
SDA’s 16 July launch report counted 63 Tranche 1 transport satellites delivered by the first three flights. Adding the 21 from this mission gives 84 delivered across four flights; that is a launch total, with orbital commissioning and operational readiness assessed separately.
Tranche 1 is being assembled across successive launches
SDA plans 126 Transport Layer satellites and 28 Tracking Layer satellites for Tranche 1, according to its July report. The agency identified 2027 as the target for initial operational capability.
Each additional orbital plane extends the architecture’s coverage. The next stages include raising spacecraft to their operating orbits, testing the communications links and integrating them with the wider military network.
