Nobody agrees how many rockets have flown this year

The world has attempted 186 orbital launches to 6 August. Catalogues that all count carefully put China's share anywhere from 55 to about 70, because they draw the line between a launch and a test in different places.

The launch count is the space industry’s most quoted number. This year the world has attempted 186 orbital launches to 6 August, of which 180 worked, against 330 across the whole of 2025. Our own Analysis desk publishes the table, because it is the figure readers ask for first. It also rewards a little suspicion.

Two honest counts, fifteen flights apart

Start with China. On the itemised tables the total is 55 so far this year. Trackers using wider definitions land higher, and China’s own stated ambition for 2026 sits near 140. None of those numbers is a lie. They differ over where the boundary sits: what counts as orbital, when a suborbital test article belongs in the tally, whether a failure that reached space is an attempt or an event.

Starship is the clearest case. Its 2026 test flights fly deliberately suborbital profiles and splash down. Jonathan McDowell’s launch log folds them into orbital launch attempts; Wikipedia’s itemised tables keep them out. Both are defensible, and a reader comparing two headlines built on different choices is comparing nothing at all.

What the flight actually delivered

The bigger problem is that a launch measures activity, not capability. Flight 13 in July pushed twenty Starlink V3 satellites out of a Starship for the first time, which is a genuine engineering milestone. None of them is in service: the vehicle was on a suborbital path and the catalogue records them that way. In the tally it sits level with a Falcon 9 putting a working batch into a usable orbit. One was a demonstration; the other was a job of work.

The constellation figures do a better job of it. There are 10,904 working Starlink satellites on Jonathan McDowell’s independent count, and roughly 16,000 active satellites in orbit altogether, two thirds of them from one operator. Those numbers count things that exist and do something. A launch tally counts how often somebody lit an engine.

The figures that belong beside it

The count is worth keeping. It tracks industrial tempo, and held to one methodology it compares to itself year on year. It just needs company on the page: mass delivered to orbit, working spacecraft added, missions that met their stated objective.
