The station handover has a deadline and no crew has flown the bridge
The International Space Station is funded to 2030 and its deorbit vehicle is already under contract. Every proposed replacement is funded, none has flown anyone, and the calendar is not negotiable.

Somebody has been living in orbit continuously since November 2000. Expedition 75 is aboard the International Space Station now, and NASA has introduced the crew due to replace part of it in September. That unbroken record is the single most impressive thing human spaceflight has done, and it is the thing most likely to end by administrative accident rather than by decision.
NASA commits to operating the station through 2030. The vehicle that will bring it down is already under contract: a modified Dragon, built by SpaceX under an award worth up to $843 million, owned and operated by NASA. The end of the programme is not a debate any more. It is a procurement with a schedule.
The successors are funded and untested
The replacements are real companies with real money. Vast raised $500 million in March and has signed a two-mission agreement with France and a memorandum with the UK Space Agency; its Haven-1 module has completed welding, pressure and load testing and targets a Falcon 9 launch in 2027 for four-person, two-week stays. Axiom closed financing above $525 million in June and has NASA’s order for a fifth private mission to the ISS. Sierra Space raised $550 million at an $8 billion valuation and aims to fly Dream Chaser without a crew before the year is out.
That is well over one and a half billion dollars of fresh capital in five months, which is a serious answer to the question of whether anyone wants to build these things. It is not yet an answer to the harder question. None of these stations has flown a crew. Haven-1 is a single module designed for short visits, not a continuously occupied outpost. Between a two-week stay in 2027 and a permanent facility replacing a 400-tonne laboratory lies several years of work that nobody has done before.
Why the gap would be hard to reverse
A lapse in continuous presence would not be a symbolic loss alone. Crews carry skills that decay: rendezvous operations, spacewalk procedure, the whole institutional muscle of running a shift rota 400 kilometres up. Ground teams keep those skills by exercising them. Stand the programme down for three years and the restart takes far more than turning the lights back on.
There is also the field it would leave open. Tiangong is in continuous crewed operation and China has been running smooth crew handovers, including the eighth in May. A western pause is a Chinese monopoly on the routine.
What honest planning looks like
The date is the date. Anyone with a role in filling the space after it should be judged on flown hardware rather than on renders and rounds. The useful questions for the next eighteen months are narrow: does Haven-1 launch in 2027, does anyone carry a crew to a commercial free-flyer before 2029, and does NASA’s own transition schedule ever acknowledge slippage in the private timelines it depends on.
The money has arrived. The flying has not. That is where the reporting on this desk will stay.
