World Mobile has unveiled a groundbreaking venture in telecommunications by launching a decentralised, drone-based 5G network. In partnership with Indonesia’s Protelindo, the initiative (dubbed World Mobile Stratospheric) aims to bridge connectivity gaps left by traditional infrastructure.
Aerial Innovation
The project employs hydrogen-powered drones flying at 60,000 feet in the stratosphere, each covering up to 15,000 square kilometres. These drones utilise 450 guidable beams to deliver wireless services, boasting a latency of just 6 milliseconds. This makes the service up to 18 times cheaper per gigabyte than satellite-based options.
World Mobile’s Competitive Edge
The company is eyeing a slice of the $98.3 billion sky-based communications sector, which includes satellite and aerial platforms. The satellite communications market alone is projected to reach $159 billion by 2030. World Mobile’s existing ground-based decentralised infrastructure network complements this aerial strategy by extending services to underserved areas.

Technical and Regulatory Challenges
Launching drones into the stratosphere is not without hurdles. Each drone, with a 56-metre wingspan and weighing four tons, is designed to stay airborne for nine days before refuelling. The drones must withstand cosmic radiation and extreme temperatures while meeting strict aviation regulations from bodies like the FAA and EASA.
Facing the Competition
World Mobile faces competition from both terrestrial and space-based platforms. Helium Mobile offers a decentralised network with telecom partnerships, while Elon Musk’s Starlink provides satellite internet, albeit with dedicated hardware requirements. World Mobile’s solution is tailored for areas with higher mobile user density, offering a distinct advantage.
Blockchain and Community Involvement
World Mobile’s blockchain-driven model, powered by WMTx, aligns infrastructure deployment with community participation. This approach not only enhances connectivity but also makes it economically and environmentally sustainable. CEO Micky Watkins emphasises the role of blockchain in unlocking new connectivity models.
Protelindo’s Strategic Role
Protelindo, Indonesia’s largest digital infrastructure provider, sees World Mobile’s technology as a game-changer for the region. The partnership aims to leverage World Mobile Stratospheric’s capabilities to enhance connectivity across Indonesia.
World Mobile is positioning itself as a disruptive yet complementary player in the telecom industry, offering innovative solutions to global connectivity challenges.
