Quantinuum signed a non-binding MOU with Aramco, which already runs a rival's quantum computer

Quantinuum announced a memorandum of understanding with Aramco signed in Riyadh on 31 August. Read in full, it commits to technical onboarding, knowledge exchange and benchmarking. Aramco already has a rival's quantum computer installed and running.

Quantinuum and Aramco signed a memorandum of understanding in Riyadh on 31 August 2026. Quantinuum published it on 3 September. Dr Rajeeb Hazra, its president and chief executive, signed for the company; Sami Al Ajmi, Aramco’s senior vice president for digital and information technology, signed for the oil producer.

The release describes the document as non-binding. What it commits to is preliminary technical onboarding, knowledge exchange, identifying which of Aramco’s challenges might suit quantum research, and benchmarking different quantum computing modalities.

The stated aim is broader than that: exploring a series of industrial use cases, enhancing quantum computing capabilities and preparing for a potential research collaboration on fault-tolerant quantum computing. Under the MOU itself, though, those four commitments are the whole of it. They are to talk, to share what each side knows, and to work out which problems might be worth pointing a quantum computer at.

An MOU is the weakest thing two companies can sign

A memorandum of understanding records that two parties intend to talk, and this one says so on its face by calling itself non-binding. That is what the document is, and the release describes it accurately.

The ceiling on the story is therefore fixed at those four commitments. The interesting question is the position Quantinuum is signing from.

Aramco already runs a quantum computer, supplied by Pasqal

The context that turns this from an announcement into a story is that Aramco already has quantum hardware on site and a service running on it.

A 200-qubit Pasqal neutral-atom machine was installed at Aramco’s Dhahran data centre and announced as operational on 24 November 2025, the first quantum computer in the Kingdom. In May 2026 the two launched a commercial quantum-computing-as-a-service platform on top of it, with named application areas.

So the comparison is between a running machine with a commercial service and named use cases, and a non-binding agreement to begin talking about which problems might be suitable.

The applications being attributed to this deal are the other company’s

Worth flagging for anyone reading around this. Several summaries of the Quantinuum announcement attach specific uses to it: logistics optimisation, carbon dioxide storage, well placement.

Those names come from the Pasqal side of Aramco’s quantum work, where they were attached to the commercial service. Two Aramco quantum relationships have been folded into one in the retelling, and the more advanced one has lent its detail to the newer one.

What Quantinuum would actually bring

The company’s current flagship is Helios, which it specifies at 98 fully connected physical qubits and 50 logical qubits, with single-qubit gate fidelity of 99.9975% and two-qubit fidelity of 99.921%, drawing under 40kW in its base configuration.

That is a genuinely different architecture from Pasqal’s neutral-atom machine, which is presumably part of the appeal of benchmarking modalities against each other. Quantinuum’s shares began trading on the Nasdaq Global Market as QNT on 4 June 2026, after pricing 28 million Class A shares at $60.00 the day before, for gross proceeds of $1.68bn. It has an incentive to be seen alongside a customer of Aramco’s size.

How far the evidence goes

The signing is real, the signatories are named, and the text is Quantinuum’s own. Everything above about what the MOU contains comes from reading it.

One asymmetry stands out. The announcement comes from Quantinuum alone, while Aramco’s senior vice president is the named co-signatory and Aramco has published on its own newsroom at each step of the Pasqal relationship. As of this morning the story rests on Quantinuum’s release, which for a memorandum of understanding is common enough, and is still worth noticing.
