AMD will ship Anthropic up to 2GW of chips, and invest up to $5bn in the customer buying them

AMD and Anthropic have signed a strategic partnership: Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 chips from 2027, and AMD will invest up to $5bn in Anthropic. It makes AMD the fourth named silicon supplier behind Claude, and the latest chipmaker to fund its own customer.

A bright near black-and-white editorial scene: the AMD and Anthropic logos on light plinths, a rack of Instinct MI450 GPUs between them, a HUD panel reading 2GW, MI450 and $5BN, with red, blue and green registration squares in the corners.

The contest for AI compute has a new front, and it comes with the supplier writing a cheque to its own customer.

On 22 July 2026, AMD and Anthropic announced a strategic partnership. Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs to train and run Claude, and AMD will make an equity investment of up to $5bn in Anthropic. The chipmaker is both selling the silicon and funding the buyer.

What is in the deal

The compute is the headline. Anthropic will run up to 2 GW of AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs, part of the MI450 Series, inside AMD’s Helios rack-scale systems. The first gigawatt comes online in the first half of 2027. The full 2 GW is a ceiling, not a fixed commitment: both headline numbers carry an “up to”.

It is a full-stack deal, not just accelerators. Alongside the Instinct GPUs, Anthropic gets AMD EPYC “Venice” CPUs, AMD Pensando networking and the ROCm software layer. It also builds on an existing relationship, because Anthropic already runs AMD’s current-generation Instinct MI355X.

The arrangement runs both ways. Anthropic will use Claude to optimise workloads for AMD GPUs and to accelerate ROCm development, and AMD will adopt Claude across its own engineering and product teams. The customer tunes the supplier’s software; the supplier runs on the customer’s model.

The circular financing

The $5bn is the part to watch. AMD is investing in the company that is buying its chips. AMD has not disclosed the structure, valuation, tranches or timing of the investment, only that it is an equity stake of up to $5bn made “in the future”.

This is now the shape of AI infrastructure. The firms that sell compute keep taking stakes in the labs that consume it, so a purchase commitment and an investment move together. It flatters everyone’s numbers, and it ties the fortunes of chipmaker and lab tightly together.

Anthropic’s fourth silicon supplier

For Anthropic, the logic is spreading its bets. AMD now joins a deliberately multi-vendor compute base for Claude. On Anthropic’s own figures:

Partner Compute Investment into Anthropic
Amazon (AWS Trainium) up to 5 GW; Anthropic committing over $100bn over ten years $5bn immediately, up to $20bn more
Google and Broadcom (TPU) multiple gigawatts from 2027 not disclosed
Microsoft and Nvidia $30bn of Azure compute, up to 1 GW more Nvidia up to $10bn, Microsoft up to $5bn
AMD (Instinct MI450) up to 2 GW from 2027 up to $5bn

“Access to compute is central to keeping Claude at the frontier and meeting demand from our customers,” said Tom Brown, Anthropic’s co-founder and chief compute officer. “Running across a diversified range of hardware lets us map the right workloads to the right hardware.” Lisa Su, AMD’s chair and chief executive, framed it as a proving ground for Helios: “This collaboration brings together Anthropic’s leadership in frontier AI with the full strength of AMD high-performance computing.”

One date is real, the rest is intent

For AMD, this is a marquee win against Nvidia in the one market that sets the next decade of chip revenue. For Anthropic, it is insurance: four named silicon platforms mean no single supplier, or single shortage, can throttle Claude. The figure to keep an eye on is the only one with a firm date attached, the first gigawatt in the first half of 2027. The rest is a ceiling and an intention, which is not the same as a delivery.
