eBay releases first NFT collection to mainstream buyers

On Monday, eBay launched its first nonfungible token drop with a series of tokenised collectibles featuring National Hockey League (NHL) legend Wayne Gretsky.

Inspired by Sports Illustrated magazine covers, the NFT collection depicts animated versions of Gretsky. There are four tiers of rarity, including green at 299 editions, gold at 199, platinum at 99 and diamond at 15.

All are now available on eBay. The limited edition diamond, platinum, and gold tiers worth $1,500, $100, and $25 have all already been sold out.

The collection was created in partnership with environmental NFT platform OneOf, which uses multiple “energy-efficient blockchains” to provide sustainable NFT collections.

Since mid-2021, eBay has enabled NFT listings, but has not integrated blockchain technology to facilitate sales on its platform. Users will receive an email from the platform sending them a redemption link to receive their NFT off the platform.

The NFTs are minted on Ethereum scaling platform Polygon and can be traded on OneOf. “You don’t have to be a crypto expert to buy, sell, and collect NFTs. OneOf and eBay are bringing transformative Web3 technology to the next 100M non-crypto-native mass consumers,” said OneOf CEO Lin Dai.

Dawn Block, eBay’s vice president of collectibles, electronics and home, has said that NFT technology is “revolutionizing the collectibles space” and that the firm is looking to bring NFTs to mainstream collectors worldwide:

“Through our partnership with OneOf, eBay is now making coveted NFTs more accessible to a new generation of collectors everywhere. This builds upon our commitment to deliver high passion, high-value items to the eBay community of buyers and sellers.”
