Owners of NFTs urged to be watchful after $1.5M worth of Moonbirds stolen by clicking malicious link

A scammer has received $1.5 million worth of Moonbird NFTs via a malicious link used on a Proof Collective member.

The Proof Collective member has lost 29 extremely valuable Ethereum based NFT’s. After clicking a malicious link shared by a scammer, the victim lost 29 Moonbird nonfungible tokens (NFTs) worth $1.5 million.

Dollar, a Twitter personality and NFT holder, said the suspect was already half doxxed by crypto exchanges and members of Proof Collective were working on a full FBI report.

Two other users claimed that while trying to negotiate a deal, a trader insisted on using a “p2peer” platform to conclude the deal.

The number of victims in total is unknown, but it serves as a reminder that even the most savviest of NFT investors must be wary of scammers. It is crucial that NFT owners use caution when dealing with third-party platforms, and double-check anything shared by others, even when it seems trustworthy.

A phishing attack recently hacked NFT creator Mike Winkelmann, better known as Beeple. As a result of this scam, $438K in cryptocurrency and NFTs were gained by the attacker.
