CRO is the token of Crypto.com and the Cronos chains, used for gas, staking and app rewards, with a supply history that includes a 70 billion burn and its 2025 reversal.
What it is
Cronos is the blockchain ecosystem attached to Crypto.com, the Singapore-founded exchange best known for its sports sponsorships and its card products, and CRO is its native token. CRO began life in 2018 as a token on Ethereum before the group launched chains of its own. The Cronos universe now spans two networks: Cronos EVM, an Ethereum-compatible chain built with the Cosmos SDK, and Cronos POS, a Cosmos chain aimed at payments and NFTs. The memorable fact is its supply history, which includes one of the largest token burns ever carried out, and, four years later, its reversal.
How it works
Cronos EVM is built on the Cosmos SDK, an open-source toolkit for building blockchains, with Ethermint providing compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine. In practice that means developers can deploy the same Solidity smart contracts they would write for Ethereum, while the chain connects to the wider Cosmos world through IBC, a standard for moving assets between chains. CRO pays transaction fees on the chains, can be staked to secure them, and doubles as the loyalty asset inside Crypto.com’s exchange and card programmes, where holding it unlocks rewards.
The story so far
In February 2021 the project burned 70 billion CRO, the bulk of its 100 billion supply, presenting the destruction as a commitment to decentralisation. In March 2025 a governance proposal reversed course: the community vote approved reissuing the same 70 billion into a Cronos Strategic Reserve, an escrow wallet vesting linearly over ten years in total, restoring the original 100 billion supply. Reversing a burn is almost unheard of, and the vote drew strong opinions on both sides before it passed. The same year Crypto.com announced a strategic partnership with Trump Media and Technology Group involving the Cronos ecosystem, a tie-up with a sitting US president’s media company that is worth knowing about when weighing the token, as the company’s own announcements set out.
Where it stands
As of late July 2026, CRO ranks about 34th by market value at roughly $2.7 billion, with around 47 billion tokens circulating out of a total supply back near 100 billion, according to CoinGecko. The reserve’s ten-year vesting schedule means new supply will keep arriving gradually for years. Worth watching from here: how the Strategic Reserve tokens are actually deployed, whether the Trump Media partnership and related products deepen or fade, and whether activity on the Cronos chains grows beyond the exchange’s own user base.
