Tesla held 11,509 Bitcoin at the end of September and recorded a $288 million unrealised digital-asset gain during the third quarter of 2026. Its quarterly filing puts the carrying value of digital assets at $962 million on 30 September. Bitcoin makes up the majority of that balance.

The coin count matches Tesla’s June quarter disclosure. The latest results, released on 21 October, show how a continuing Bitcoin holding can affect reported earnings as its market value changes.

The balance rose from $674m to $962m

Tesla’s digital-asset carrying value increased by $288 million between the end of June and the end of September. The quarterly update records $674 million for Q2 and $962 million for Q3. The increase is approximately 42.7%, calculated from those reported balances.

The $288 million figure describes the gain recognised during Q3. Tesla’s filing separately gives an acquisition cost of $386 million for its Bitcoin holding. Acquisition cost, quarter-end value and the gain for a particular reporting period each answer a different question.

A price change flows through the accounts

US accounting rules require qualifying crypto assets to be measured at fair value each reporting period, with changes recognised in net income. The Financial Accounting Standards Board’s crypto-asset update established that treatment, together with disclosures about holdings and movements.

An unrealised gain therefore records an increase in the value of assets that remain held. Cash from a disposal belongs to the separate transaction record. The same accounting approach also recognises decreases when prices fall.

The holding gives earnings continuing Bitcoin exposure

Tesla’s unchanged 11,509-coin position keeps Bitcoin prices relevant to its financial results. The Q3 reconciliation separately identifies the unrealised digital-asset gain when moving between its GAAP and non-GAAP measures.

For readers comparing quarters, the useful sequence is the coin holding, its period-end value and the gain or loss recognised in that period. Tesla’s September figures show the same Bitcoin position alongside a substantially higher reported valuation.
