OpenAI DevDay unveils agents and GPT-6.1 Sol
OpenAI's 29 September DevDay introduced dots, GPT-6.1 Sol, new agent APIs, Codex tools, plugins and team features. This is the full announcement list and rollout status.

OpenAI announced 25 named releases and updates at DevDay in San Francisco on 29 September 2026, according to its event recap. The largest changes are dots, agents designed to keep working on a person’s behalf; GPT-6.1 Sol, a lower-priced model for complex work; and new tools for developers building agents and software. The rest of the programme reaches across Codex, plugins, shared workspaces and subscription plans.
The event programme set Sam Altman’s opening keynote for 10am Pacific time, followed by technical sessions, workshops and a closing session. OpenAI’s published recap is the record for the announcement list below. Availability varies sharply: some products are rolling out today, others are in preview, and several are due later.
During a question-and-answer session, Altman said OpenAI was investing more in agent safety, security and monitoring, the Associated Press reported. The agency also reported that OpenAI had paused a separate advanced model’s release after researchers raised security concerns the day before DevDay.
Dots can keep working between conversations
Dots are OpenAI’s new agents for ongoing work. Each has its own cloud computer and can use connected apps to pursue tasks over time. A user can inspect the computer, give feedback and set permissions. OpenAI says a dot’s background research uses connected tools with read-only access; actions with wider effects are governed by rules and review controls described in its dots announcement.
Dots are rolling out to Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. Enterprise, Education and Healthcare workspaces can try a beta when an administrator enables it. OpenAI also previewed specialist dots for organisations, with separate identities and defined responsibilities, and said it is working with Microsoft to bring their governance into Agent 365.
GPT-6.1 Sol costs $2 per million input tokens
GPT-6.1 Sol is available from 29 September in the API, ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI’s model announcement lists standard API prices of $2 per million input tokens, $0.10 per million cached input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. The company says the model approaches GPT-6 Astra on several coding, computer-use and professional-work evaluations at about one-fifth of Astra’s standard token price. Those are OpenAI’s reported test results, and the performance difference depends on the task and evaluation setting.
The model is available to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users in Work and Codex. OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol is due in Chat later. A separate Ultrafast tier offers up to eight times faster token generation in Codex and six times in the API for selected workloads: GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast is available today in the API, Work and Codex on Pro 500 and Enterprise, while the Sol version is coming soon.
Developers received new agent tools
OpenAI added tools for building agents that make defined choices and operate software. Decisions API uses a user’s finite set of answers to classify or route inputs. The Agents API now supports computer use and adds multi-agent capabilities, tool search, tool calls and context compaction. OpenAI also announced an Amazon collaboration that brings those capabilities into Bedrock Managed Agents for AWS users.

Codex gained cloud work, review and security tools
OpenAI expanded Codex from a local coding interface into cloud and remote workflows. Developers can run tasks from a computer or phone, use reusable development environments and review changes in the ChatGPT desktop app. The CLI gained voice input, an agents view and workflow improvements. Codex Security Cloud can scan repositories and prepare investigated fixes.

Plugins gained a place in the interface
Plugin extensions can now add sidebar homes, interactive panels and file viewers to ChatGPT. OpenAI also announced a revised Plugin Creator, a clearer submission process, and ranking and recommendations to help people discover plugins. Supported plugins can run inside Sites, while proposed MCP Events support would let connected app events start automations. The plugin releases and availability are set out in the DevDay recap.

ChatGPT gained shared workspaces and documents
ChatGPT Space is a shared workspace for people, ChatGPT and dots to build on team knowledge. Pages are documents people and agents can edit together; interactive collaborative slides are planned. OpenAI also introduced team tasks, @ChatGPT in Slack and Microsoft Teams, a Meetings plugin, shareable profiles and Sign in with ChatGPT for outside tools.

OpenAI’s published list also includes a Pro 500 plan, with a usage allowance described as 25 times the ChatGPT Plus allowance, and an OpenAI Marketplace programme through which eligible enterprise customers can apply part of an existing OpenAI commitment to approved partner software. The company names 32 initial marketplace partners.
The day adds several ways for people to assign work to AI and for developers to put agents into applications. What a reader can use today depends on the product, country, subscription and whether a preview has opened.
